NZ 18s hand France U19 their first loss

A dominant first half saw New Zealand Residents 18s defeat France U19 44–26 at Rotorua International Stadium earlier today.

The Kiwis ran in six first half tries, which included a double to prop Caius Faatili.

After Faatili opened the scoring, French winger Thomas Soler pounced on an intercept and ran the length of the field to score.

New Zealand regained control shortly after when second rower Tukimihia Simpkins dived on a Jordan Coleman grubber.

Fa’atili burst through for his second in the 30th minute and the floodgates opened.

Coleman, Taniela Otukolo and Semisi Tapa all scored tries in the ten minutes before half time.

The Kiwis extended their lead to 40 early in the second half thanks to tries from Feao Tongia and Caleb Pese.

The rest of the half was all France, as they added some respectability to the scoreline.

Halfback Thomas Lacans was instrumental in his side’s solid half, scoring a try and setting up another.

The loss is France’s first on their tour of New Zealand, after defeating Canterbury and Waikato.

Their final game takes place on Sunday, October 6 at Pulman Park, as they take on the Auckland under-19 side.

The New Zealand 18s play straight after against Toa Samoa under-18s.
