The Sunshine Coast Falcons have defeated the Wynnum Manly Seagulls 34–28 at Dolphin Stadium to win their first Hastings Deering Colts premiership.
Hooker Tyson Smoothy was named Man of the Match, after an impressive showing in which he scored the game-sealing try.
The Seagulls opened the scoring in the 10th minute through halfback David Quinlan before the Falcons hit back with a try to winger Blake Wilson.
Wynnum Manly got their nose in front 10 minutes later when Lachlan Perry scored but again were reeled in by the Falcons when second rower Trent Loiero crossed the try line.
The Seagulls wrestled back momentum once again when Dredin Sorensen-McGee scored shortly before half time.
Three minutes into the second half, Wynnum Manly’s Ryan O’Keefe was sin binned for a professional foul, which saw the Falcons capitalise with a try to Luke Murtagh to level the scores.
Keeping with the trend of the game, the Seagulls again jumped six points ahead when Nofoasa Malutoa barged over for a try.
They then kicked a penalty goal to extended their lead to eight but disaster struck minutes later when Clayton Mack was sin binned for striking.
Facing 12 men again, the Falcons crossed twice through second rower Steven Borg and took the lead for the first time in the game in the 58th minute.
With five minutes to play, Smoothy put the game out of reach, jumping over from dummy half to score under the posts.
Trailing by eight, Wynnum Manly opted for a penalty goal to cut the lead and give themselves a shot at a try in the dying minutes.
They were unsuccessful, dropping the ball in the Sunshine Coast’s half with seconds remaining.
The Falcons booted the ball into touch from the scrum and secured their first ever Colts premiership.
