North Devils 34 def. Tweed Heads Seagulls 4
Norths returned to form in Round 9, bouncing back from their first loss of the year with a convincing 30-point win over Tweed Heads. The game was sealed by half time, as the Devils jumped out to a 22-0 lead going into the break. Two more tries after the intermission extended their lead to 34 before a consolation try to Seagulls’ prop Ben Thomas in the 54th minute. The Devils finished with six tries to six different try scorers.
CQ Capras 18 def. Ipswich Jets 16
It was a wild game in Woorabinda on Saturday afternoon, as Central Queensland fought back from 16 points down to snatch victory from Ipswich. The Jets came out firing, scoring three tries in the opening 20 minutes to lead 16-0. The Capras wouldn’t score their first try until final 10 minutes and grabbed their second just five minutes later. In the final minute, second rower Wes Sisifa crossed to level the scores, with Travis Turnbull converting to seal the win.
Western Mustangs 23 def. Townsville Blackhawks 22
The Western Mustangs pulled off the upset of 2019 so far, defeating the second-place Blackhawks in Toowoomba. After a strong first half, the Mustangs led 18-4 and 22-10 at times in the second half, before Townsville surged back into the game, levelling the scores in the 54th minute. With five seconds remaining, Mustangs’ five-eighth Sam Thompson stepped up and slotted the field goal to secure his side’s first win of the season.
Burleigh Bears 50 def. Redcliffe Dolphins 6
Jayden Campbell recorded his second hat trick in two weeks as Burleigh made easy work of Redcliffe at Dolphin Stadium. The Bears, who led 32-0 at half time, ran in nine tries against the last-placed Dolphins. On top of Campbell’s hat trick, wingers Reece Tapine and debutant Trey Peni both crossed for doubles. Burleigh, who are now second, have scored 50 points in each of their last three games.
Mackay Cutters 30 def. Northern Pride 18
Mackay handed the Northern Pride their first loss of the season, snapping a four-game losing streak in the process. The Cutters got on the board early through returning five-eighth Tom Irelandes and added two more tries before the Pride finally got on the board in the 28th minute. A try 10 minutes after half time to Jonah Rameka got the Pride within 10 but two Cutters’ tries in eight minutes sealed the victory for the home side.
Wynnum Manly Seagulls 46 def. Easts Tigers 6
Wynnum Manly secured their second straight victory after a dominant 40-point win over Easts at Kougari Oval. The Seagulls were in control throughout the entire contest, running in five first half tries for a 28-0 lead. Three more followed in the second before Easts crossed late for a consolation try. Shannon Gardiner, David Quinlan and Jack Stafford all scored doubles in the win, with Gardiner adding seven goals for a 22-point personal haul.
Sunhsine Coast Falcons 40 def. Souths Logan Magpies 16
The Sunshine Coast’s great form continued into Round 9 with a 24-point over Souths Logan at Davies Park. An first half double to second rower Steven Borg helped the Falcons to a 10-point half time lead. They extended that lead to 16 after the break before a try to Souths Logan debutant Lance Bagon cut it to 10. The Falcons pushed away in the final 20, crossing three times to secure the win.
