The Penrith Panthers won the 2022 Jersey Flegg Cup Grand Final in dramatic fashion with a 19-18 win over the Newcastle Knights on Sunday.

Trailing 18-6 with 12 minutes to play, the Panthers scored two tries in the final five minutes to send the game into extra time.

After 10 minutes of extra time saw no points scored, the game then headed into sudden death golden point.

The Knights started the period with a great chance to win it but were unable to get a field goal away, with Panthers fullback Liam Ison scooping up an knock on to put his side over half away with a brilliant run.

A few tackles later, Dolphins-bound halfback Isaiya Katoa kicked the premiership-winning field goal in the 84th minute.

Panthers captain and lock Hohepa Puru was named Player of the Match.

The premiership is Penrith’s first in the Jersey Flegg since 2007 and their fifth overall.
