Former St George Illawarra Dragons head coach Paul McGregor has been appointed head coach of the New South Wales under-19 side for 2021.

McGregor, who represented New South Wales in State of Origin 14 times, coached the Dragons for seven seasons before being released in August of last year.

The appointment by the New South Wales Rugby League also confirms that the Under-18 State of Origin (which ran from 2008 to 2019) will move to an Under-19 format, inline with a number of competitions that moved up a year in 2021.

There was no Under-18 Origin held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of state competitions.

An Under-19 Origin game was last held in 2007, with New South Wales defeating Queensland 14–10 at Suncorp Stadium.
