
Burleigh Bears 52 def. Western Mustangs 10
Burleigh handed the Mustangs their seventh-straight defeat with a 42-point thrashing on Anzac Day. The Bears, who led 26-4 at half time, were relentless, running in 10 tries to the Mustangs’ two. Winger Jayden Campbell, son of Titans’ legend Preston, and hooker Lochlan Turnbull scored 32 of the Bears’ points by themselves, with Campbell scoring a hat trick and kicking two goals and Turnbull scoring twice and kicking four. The win is Burleigh’s third on the trot.
Easts Tigers 30 def. Redcliffe Dolphins 12
Despite a host of changes to their starting lineup, the Tigers still put a winless Redcliffe to the sword with an 18-point victory. Winger Zac Croft had a debut to remember for Easts, scoring a hat trick of tries, the first of which was in the first minute of the game. The win gets the Tigers back on track after two straight losses, while the Dolphins are still searching for their first win of 2019.
Northern Pride 24 def. Norths Devils 18
It was a top of the table clash at Emerson Park on Saturday afternoon, with the Pride prevailing over Norths to keep their undefeated streak alive. The Pride led 14-10 at half time but tries to Michael McGrath, his second of the game, and Sosefo Filipine gave the Devils’ a four-point lead. The scoreline was unchanged for almost 20 minutes until the Pride regained the lead through a converted Brandon Jackonia try. Zane Knowles scored with two minutes to play to seal the victory for the Pride and hand Norths their first loss of 2019.
Townsville Blackhawks 60 def. CQ Capras 12
Townsville produced the biggest win of the season so far, putting 60 on the Capras in a 48-point victory. Mal Meninga Cup top try scorer Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow scored the first of his three tries just three minutes into his Colts debut, as the Blackhawks charged to a 38-0 half time lead. Townsville finished with 11 tries, with centre Michael Bell joining Tabuai-Fidow with a hat trick of his own. The win, Townsville’s fourth straight, propels them into second, while the loss was the Capras first since Round 4.
Sunshine Coast Falcons 26 def. Mackay Cutters 16
The Falcons picked up their second straight win and handed Mackay their fourth straight loss, with a 10-point victory at Sunshine Coast Stadium. The Cutters led 16-10 at half time and looked set for a possible win until a sin binning after the break saw the Falcons take advantage and score two tries to take the lead. A late try to Falcons’ winger Blake Wilson, his eighth of 2019, sealed the victory for the home side.
Tweed Heads Seagulls 22 def. Ipswich Jets 10
Tweed Heads extended their unbeaten streak to four games with a tough 12-point victory over Ipswich at Piggabeen. The Seagulls jumped out to a 10-0 lead after two tries in four minutes before the Jets got on the board through winger Sam Langbein. Trailing by six at the break, the Jets levelled the scores shortly after when Wilson Malaesilia crossed the line but it was short lived, as Tweed scored twice in four minutes again to regain the lead.
Wynnum Manly Seagulls 18 def. Souths Logan Magpies 14
Wynnum Manly and Souths Logan travelled to Stradbroke Island for the final game of Round 8, with Wynnum running out four-point winners. It was a tight contest in the first half, Souths Logan taking a six point lead into the break. A penalty goal after half time extended their lead to eight before Wynnum surged back into the contest. Ryan O’Keefe’s second try of the afternoon got the Seagulls within two and a Zane Wallace try eight minutes before the siren gave them the lead and the win.
