Penrith Panthers 50 def. Cronulla Sharks 10
Round 6 began with a top of the table clash between Cronulla and Penrith at the newly christened PointsBet Stadium. The Sharks entered the game in first place, having yet to taste defeat in 2019. They started in great fashion, with a try to halfback Angus Ernst, but that would be the only lead they’d take. Six minutes later, Penrith crossed for their first try and would score four more to lead 28-4 at half time. Cronulla got one back shortly after the break but it didn’t lead to anything, as Penrith ran in 22 unanswered second half points. Panthers’ centre Stephen Crichton and winger Charlie Staines both scored twice in the 40-point win which put their side into first on the ladder.
Newcastle Knights 40 def. North Sydney Bears 20
The Knights recorded their third straight victory but were made to work for it by a resilient North Sydney outfit, who were looking for their first win of 2019. Newcastle led 24-8 at the break but the Bears came out firing in the second half, scoring three straight tries to trail by just four points. Newcastle wrestled back the ascendancy just minutes later through centre Tex Hoy. A try to Brandon Russell in the 51st minute further extended their lead, with Hoy grabbing his hat trick two minutes from full time to seal the win.
South Sydney Rabbitohs 22 def. Canterbury Bulldogs 6
South Sydney remained the only undefeated side in the competition after a strong 16-point victory over Canterbury at ANZ Stadium. The Rabbitohs went into the break in front 4-0 before a converted try to Bulldogs’ fullback Declan Casey gave them the lead shortly after half time. The scores were locked for the next 15 minutes until two Rabbitohs tries in the space of five minutes put them back in front. Winger Kane Allan crossed with five minutes left to play to secure the two points for South Sydney.
Sydney Roosters 18 def. Victoria Thunderbolts 10
Victoria looked to put Round 5’s 66-point loss behind them against the Roosters and came out strong with a try to hooker Trent Toelau after seven minutes. The Roosters, who’ve lost just once in 2019, levelled through a Geordie Brand try minutes later and took the lead shortly after half time after a Tyrell Neiufi try. Melbourne Storm development player Kayleb Milne scored in the 49th minute to get Victoria within two but five minutes later, a try to Freddy Lussick extended the Roosters’ lead. They held onto win their fourth game of the season.
Wests Tigers 36 def. Parramatta Eels 10
Parramatta jumped out to an early 10-0 lead against the Tigers as they looked to snap a four-game losing streak. Unfortunately for them, that’s all they would score, as the Tigers put on 36 unanswered points in the remaining hour. Winger Zac Cini scored twice in the first half as the Tigers led 18-10 at the break. Three more tries were added in the second half, with halfback Jock Madden scoring a try to go with his six conversions. The win was the third straight for the Tigers.
St George Illawarra Dragons 50 def. Manly Sea Eagles 0
Last placed Manly conceded 50 or more points for the third straight week as St George Illawarra piled on the pain at Michael Cronin Oval in Gerringong. The Dragons ran in nine tries, which included a hat trick to winger Jason Saab. Fullback Cody Ramsey also got in on the fun, crossing twice in the massive victory.
Warriors 40 def. Canberra Raiders 34
The Warriors ended a two-game losing streak with a six-point win over Canberra in a very high scoring affair. It looked like the Warriors would win the game untroubled, as they led 28-12 at half time. They then added three tries after the break to lead by 28. With 17 minutes to play, Raiders’ centre Harley Smith-Shields crossed for his second, with two more Canberra tries following in the next 10 minutes to cut the margin to six. The Warriors would hold on for the final five minutes to avoid the comeback and pick up the two competition points.
