
The FOGS Colts Challenge, Mal Meninga Cup and Cyril Connell Cup Player of the Year awards have been announced tonight at the Queensland Rugby League Major Competitions Awards in Brisbane.
FOGS Colts Challenge Player of the Year – Lane Ferling (Norths Devils)
Norths captain and five-eighth Lane Ferling was named Player of the Year in the state Under 20s competition. Ferling leads his side into the finals series this weekend, with the Devils finishing in fourth place. He scored 7 tries and kicked 6 goals during the regular season. In 2015, Ferling represented the Australian Universities side on their tour of New Zealand.
Mal Meninga Cup Players of the Year – AJ Brimson (Gold Coast White), Gerome Burns (Norths Devils)
It was joint winners in the Under 18 competition, with the Gold Coast’s AJ Brimson sharing the award with the 2015 winner, Gerome Burns. Burns represented Queensland U18 earlier this year and was the Devils’ leading point scorer. He then moved up to the Brisbane Broncos’ NYC side, playing 11 games. Brimson also moved up to the NYC after a standout Mal Meninga Cup season. Brimson has played 12 games for the Gold Coast Titans’ NYC side, playing 12 games and looking dangerous at fullback.
Cyril Connell Cup Players of the Year – David Fifita (Souths Logan Magpies), Cory Paix (Toowoomba Clydesdales)
They co-captained Queensland U16 earlier this year and now, David Fifita and Cory Paix, share the award for Player of the Year in the Under 16 competition. Paix was the leading point scorer in the Cyril Connell Cup, scoring 6 tries and kicking 44 goals for the Clydesdales. Fifita was Souths Logan’s leading try scorer, with 8, and was integral in their charge to the Grand Final.
